This is a pre-recorded webinar from PG Calc that was originally presented on December 14, 2022

One reason gift annuities are popular is that they are relatively simple to establish. However, lurking behind that simplicity are technical calculations and decision points regarding administrative procedures.Understanding these fundamentals forms the foundation for operating a successful gift annuity program. This webinar will focus on the basics of how gift annuities work and key steps in the process of issuing them. It will also examine how best practices in policies and procedures help mitigate the risk a charity takes on in operating a gift annuity program.

PG Calc Pre-Recorded Webinar:

A Better Data-Driven Approach to Identifying Top Prospects

This is a pre-recorded webinar from PG Calc that was originally presented on November 17, 2022

Data is the future of planned giving. At the University of Dayton, Matt Borden and his colleagues have taken a comprehensive approach to data, exploring beyond the traditional numeric indicators of planned giving potential with which we are all so familiar. In taking that comprehensive look, they have been able to identify new pipelines of donors, prioritize who they market to, expand their annual solicitations and closures, and decrease the time between ask and fulfillment. In this webinar, Matt will explore the many ways UD looks at planned giving data and provide you with ideas for how you can gain a deeper and wider perspective on the prospects in your own planned giving program.

Success with Life Insurance Gifts

This is a pre-recorded webinar from PG Calc that was originally presented on October 19, 2022

Life insurance: the bane of charitable giving, right? Not so fast! Too often, life insurance is presented as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. That’s too bad because a well-planned contribution of life insurance can be extremely beneficial for the organization as well as the donor. Life insurance is a powerful financial planning tool but, at its core, a charitable contribution of life insurance is simply a gift of valuable property. In this webinar, we will explore examples of life insurance gifts that really worked and review some of the pitfalls to be avoided.

Marketing Testamentary Transfers

This is a pre-recorded webinar from PG Calc that was originally presented on July 28, 2022.

Many of your institution’s loyal supporters truly have it in their heart to help your cause through a planned gift. Our job as marketers is to encourage them to take the next step: to go from just thinking about it to inquiring for more information, or to go from having done it to sharing the details with you. In this webinar, two experienced gift planners, Sam Samuels of Smith College and Carmen Tordiglione of Tufts University, will discuss the tools at your disposal to get as many of your prospects as possible to take the next step. From direct mail to webinars, Sam and Carmen will discuss 10 techniques they have used – some tried and true, some new – to encourage support of their respective institutions through a gift made by bequest or other estate gift. Newcomers to gift planning will come away with a grounding in the basics of marketing, while veterans will pick up some innovative pointers that work.

Each PG Calc Webinar is approved for 1.5 hours of CFRE Continuing Education points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification. How to Talk to People About Wealth in Ways that Inspire Major Gifts of Assets – The Science and the Sentences

AFP & SDPGP Members: $20 | Non-Members: $30

Join AFP San Diego and SDPGP for our special annual joint presentation on planned giving. Our presenter, Professor Russell James, is an energetic and engaging speaker who provides compelling research and practical tips for fundraisers of all levels – whether planned giving is your focus or not.  As Professor James proclaimed, “You don’t need to be a gift planning expert to inspire major gifts of assets. You just need to attend this presentation!”

Presentation topic:

Wealth is not held in cash; it’s held in other assets like stocks, bonds, real estate, and IRAs. Research shows that shifting donors to giving from their wealth (assets), rather than just from their cash (disposable income), can lead to transformational donations. But how can we actually make this happen? Talking about someone else’s wealth can be scary! In this presentation, Professor James walks through the step-by-step process that makes these conversations simple, easy, and stress free.

Presenter:

Russell James, J.D., Ph.D., CFP® is a chaired professor in the Department of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech University where he directs the on-campus and online graduate program in Charitable Financial Planning (planned giving).  He graduated, cum laude, from the University of Missouri School of Law where he was a member of the Missouri Law Review and received the United Missouri Bank Award for Most Outstanding Work in Gift and Estate Taxation and Planning. He also holds a Ph.D. in consumer economics from the University of Missouri, where his dissertation was on charitable giving.

Prior to his career as an academic researcher, Dr. James worked as the Director of Planned Giving for Central Christian College in Moberly, Missouri for 6 years and later served as president of the college for more than 5 years. During his presidency the college successfully completed two major capital campaigns, built several new debt-free buildings, and more than tripled enrollment.

Dr. James has published research in more than 75 peer-reviewed scientific journal and law review articles. He is author of several books including The Storytelling Fundraiser, The Epic Fundraiser, The Primal Fundraiser, The Socratic Fundraiser, Inside the Mind of the Bequest Donor, and Visual Planned Giving. He has been quoted on charitable and financial issues in a variety of news sources including The Economist, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, ABC News, U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, the Associated Press, Bloomberg News and the Chronicle of Philanthropy and his financial neuroimaging research was profiled in The Wall Street Journal’s Smart Money Magazine.

Dr. James has spoken over 400 times at regional, national, and international conferences on fundraising, financial planning, and estate planning. His teaching awards include the University of Georgia Outstanding Teacher of the Year (department level and college level), Texas Tech University Instructor of the Year (department level and school level), and the CASE “Stellar Speaker” designation. He is a member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners “Hall of Fame.”
